MESSAGE #250 JUST IN CASE…

I posted an audio message today through utterz.com so we’ll see if it works. If not, this should hold you over…

Today I have a double-header: I’m giving a talk at the Special Olympics Coaches University on Sports Psychology and then I will be the MC for Rider’s Leadership Challenge Day.

Here are a couple quotes on leadership…

“The ultimate responsibility of a leader is to facilitate other people’s development as well as his own.”
-Fred Pryor

“To be a leader means willingness to risk-and a willingness to love. Has the leader given you something from the heart?”
-Hubert H. Humphrey

MESSAGE #249 THAT’S MORE LIKE IT…

Now I’m getting some requests for tips…yesterday I got an email from a baseball coach from the US and a para glider in Mexico. Keep ’em coming.

Today I’d like to share with you Abraham Lincoln’s favorite riddle…

How many legs does a dog have if you call his tail a leg?

Answer: Four, because calling a tail a leg does not make it a leg.

I’d love to hear your interpretations and comments…

MESSAGE #248 BY REQUEST…

As I said in yesterday’s blog, this blog and these messages are for YOU so let me know what you need. I only received one request yesterday. ONE. Now I know nobody out there is perfect, so why did only one person email me? That’s part of what is wrong with society…there are so many great resources out there, but nobody uses them. If you don’t want to post a comment, you can send me an email.

So the email I got was from a student in California. She went from working full-time and going to school part-time to going to school full-time and working part-time. The concern is that she used to have all this money to spend and now not so much.

I think wealth on the outside is nothing without wealth on the inside. I know many rich people who have mansions and 12 cars but are miserable. They want this and they want that…what they should be doing is appreciating this and appreciating that. See, everyone is chasing money and material objects, but the problem is, once they get it, they want more. So what’s happening is that they are constantly chasing happiness. But it’s already inside them. Teachers of Zen say that mastery is talking to someone when you are talking to someone and playing tennis when you are playing tennis. So become a master of your own life and a master of your destiny…stay in the present, have fun, kick butt in school then the money will come cascading towards you. Don’t forget to contribute to others.

“It’s not your landscape, it’s your mindscape.”

MESSAGE #246 LAST BLOG MESSAGE…

Today’s message is especially dedicated to ALL of my readers.

This will unfortunately be my last blog entry. Two hundred and forty-six messages is a lot and I’m proud of that, but it’s a major commitment. I really enjoyed my mornings trying to inspire and motivate all of you to become better, but I will not be able to do it any longer.

I hope some of you have gotten something out of this and quite possibly some of these stories, quotes and videos will stay in your mind for a long time. I wish you all the best.

This isn’t easy for me to just stop doing something that has been part of me for so long and I don’t want to make it any harder than it is, so I will leave you with these final words…

Happy April Fool’s Day.

Thanks for reading…see you tomorrow.

If Jason McElwain can do this with autism, imagine what you can do? He believes that he is just like everybody else. With that mindset, anything can happen. “The Game of My Life” by Jason McElwain is now in bookstores…get it and get inspired.

MESSAGE #243 DOUBT THE DOUBTERS

Today’s message is especially dedicated to the great Barbara Hillary.

While pursuing your dreams, there will be doubters along the way. Those doubters might be friends, family members, teammates, co-workers, strangers or even yourself. If you are truly passionate about something, don’t let anything or anyone get in your way, just make sure it’s something good for you and good for the world. Anything is possible with the right strategy.

When Barbara Hillary said she was going to be the first African American woman to cross the North Pole at age 75, everyone said she couldn’t do it. Well, she did it…right after she beat lung cancer. And guess what? Later this year, she’s going to the South Pole!

Instead of trying your best, DO WHATEVER IT TAKES.

“Never let the fear of striking out get in your way.”

-Babe Ruth

MESSAGE #242 FLOAT LIKE A BUTTERFLY, STING LIKE A BEE

“Champions aren’t made in gyms. Champions are made from something they have deep inside them-a desire, a dream, a vision. They have to have last-minute stamina, they have to be a little faster, they have to have the skill and the will. But the will must be stronger than the skill.”

MESSAGE #241 HOW TO BECOME ONE OF THE BEST…

Today’s message is especially dedicated to the great Val Barnaby.

The way to become one of the best is to…

Train with the best.

Learn from the best.

Hang around the best.

Val Barnaby was one of the best. He played football for Rutgers and signed a free agent contract with the Detroit Lions of the NFL. Val was tied for second in the Big East (14th nationally) with 10.0 sacks in 2005… Helped lead the Scarlet Knights pass rush which ranked second nationally with 47 sacks… Tied for seventh in the conference with 13 tackles for loss… Finished career with 109 tackles, 23 tackles for loss and 12.0 sacks.

I trained with Val on Tuesday. I was about to do a quick workout on my own but after my warm up, I walked by Val who was being trained by Parisi Speed School Manager, Anthony Carter and all I heard was “Hey Ed, wanna workout?” I looked up and saw the shadow of a 6’3″, 285lb Defensive End waiting for a response while doing one armed standing rows.

I wasn’t sure if he was serious or not, but without hesitation, I said, “Sure.” So I joined their workout session and it was amazing. Carter worked us out for about an hour focusing mostly on the back and finishing with abs.

Now I know what you’re thinking, and no, I didn’t lift the same amount as Val. But I did the same routine. I’m not trying to get into the NFL, though I felt like I might be able to be a running back for the Cowboys after our workout. So I did less weight, not only to prevent injury, but to be specific to my own fitness goals.

And yes, I’m still a bit sore today, but not TOO sore.

So how does this relate to you? Well, whatever you want to be great at, seek out the great ones and find out their secrets. Ask them what they would do if they were in your shoes. See if they are willing to be a mentor to you. Spend as much time as you can with them. Work for them. You become the average of the five people you hang around most. And don’t think the experts won’t want to talk to you, you might be surprised. At the very least, read the books that the experts have written. There’s many options.

After I worked out with Val, I instantly felt stronger, more energized, more confident and ready to take on the world.

You can too.

“All our dreams can come true-if we have the courage to pursue them.”
-Walt Disney

Thank you to Val Barnaby and Anthony Carter…and thanks for reading.
