Message #180 THE ONLY STORY YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT SPORTS PSYCHOLOGY…

Today’s message is especially dedicated to the great Ben Zislis.

Once upon a time, there was a tennis player. This tennis player was playing on his high school team. Well, one day, his coach says, “I’m going to move you from Varsity to Junior Varsity.”

The player said, “Alright, but why?”

“Because you’re lazy.”

It was at that moment that the tennis player thought, “NOBODY is EVER going to call me lazy again in tennis.”

So he went down to JV and all he did was become the most ENERGETIC player on the team. He started hustling and really working hard. He was playing better and really pumping all the other teammates up. After a match one day, an older gentleman approached the young man. “Son, I like what ya got. How would you like a scholarship to Harvard University?”

This young man went on to Harvard, graduated and began working. Well, he got a job as a sales person for some big time company, and worked for a few months. Then one day he got fired. So he went into his boss’ office, and said, “Why did I get fired?”

“Because you’re lazy.”

So the young man thought to himself, “NOBODY is EVER going to call me lazy again in sales.”

He didn’t change anything in his selling approach.

He didn’t learn anything new about sales.

All he did was become the most energetic sales person.

He went on to become a very successful salesperson.

So that’s it…

In order to INSTANTLY improve at what you do, just INCREASE your energy.

It could be at tennis, work, relationships, teaching, telling a story, public speaking…anything.

Message #179 SLOW DOWN!!!

How fast are you going?

Do the days/weeks/months/years FLY by?

Are you trying to do too many things?

Do you feel like you’re not getting any better at your sport?

Do you LIVE for the weekends?

Here’s the thing…

Instead of focusing on the QUANTITY of the things you do, focus on the QUALITY. Practice does not make perfect; PERFECT practice makes perfect. In other words, the amount of TIME you put in doing something is not as important as the amount of EFFORT AND PASSION you put into something…

You don’t necessarily need to work longer hours, perhaps you just need to be more efficient.

You don’t necessarily need to spend more time with your mate, perhaps you just need to make the moments you are with them better quality.

You don’t necessarily need to practice tennis more, perhaps you just need to be more specific with your practice sessions.

Also, STAY IN THE PRESENT! We, as humans are habit forming creatures and sometimes we “mindlessly” do the same things day in and day out looking towards the weekend or some far off vacation.

Tomorrow is not promised, live every day to it’s fullest. Have GRATITUDE for being alive and everything that life has to offer. THIS will help you slow down life and help you become happier, healthier and live longer.

The road to success is always under construction, so as they say in those construction zones…”Give us a brake.”

SLOW DOWN and enjoy today.

Message #178 Self Esteem

Upsets never surprise me anymore. How can someone unseeded beat the #2 in the world? It starts in the mind.

Just watch the body language between Tsonga and Nadal. You can cover the score and see who is winning.

Lesson: When you have Self-Esteem, you can do anything!

Message #177 THE SECRET TO SUCCESS…IN ANYTHING

I have good news and bad news…

The bad news is…

If you didn’t call last night for the phone seminar on “Success in School,” you missed a great talk.

The good news is…

You can hear the recording of it right now!

Call 641 715 3413

Access Code: 1072571, and then press #

Even though this seminar was geared towards students, the principles are the same. Here’s one…

In order to achieve success all you have to do is…

SURPASS EXPECTATIONS

What does this mean? Easy, just find out what’s expected of you and do a little bit more. So obviously, if you’re a student, find out what the teacher expects of you and just do a little bit more.

If you have a job, find out what your boss expects of you and “do a little bit more.”

If you are in a relationship, find out what your mate wants out of the relationship and “do a little bit more.”

If you are in sales, find out the needs of your customers and “do a little bit more.”

You know why this works?

Because NOBODY else is doing it!

Message #176 Imagine What YOU Can Do…

Yesterday, I met one of my idols, Jenny Murphy.

Jenny is a college student.

Jenny plays tennis, intramural football and soccer.

Jenny has been named player of the week…

Jenny is legally blind.

When playing tennis, she HEARS the ball hit by the other player and then can only SEE the ball when it bounces on her side of the court.

When playing QUARTERBACK for her football team, the receivers communicate with her by clapping or talking.

And when she plays soccer, I believe she is the goalie.

Jenny is one of my all-time heroes; if she can be a successful athlete while being legally blind…

IMAGINE WHAT YOU CAN DO…

“It’s not the hand that you’re dealt, it’s how you play the game.”

Thanks, Jenny.

And thank you for reading.

Message #175 Right is Wrong…

Do you believe that there is only ONE way to do things?

Do you feel that YOUR perspective is the ONLY perspective?

Do you feel that if what you’re doing isn’t working, you should give up?

Do you feel that if something doesn’t go your way, you are a BAD person?

THERE IS NO RIGHT OR WRONG, JUST OPTIONS.

THERE IS NO ONE PERSPECTIVE, BUT MANY.

IF WHAT YOU’RE DOING ISN’T WORKING, TRY A DIFFERENT WAY

IF YOU DON’T GET THE RESULT YOU WANT, IT’S NOT YOU, IT’S A LESSON

If you know an expert and they are TRULY an expert, they will tell you that they are often uncertain.

The reason for this uncertainty is because CONDITIONS are always changing. Many of the so-called experts go by facts. But what they don’t realize is that those facts are from the PAST and things change.

Here’s an example.

Pretend you are playing a tennis match and you are facing someone you played last year and they had no backhand. So all you did was hit to their backhand and you won the match.

Now, you are facing them again and AUTOMATICALLY you just play to their backhand, but this time you LOSE the match. You don’t know what happened.

Let me tell you what happened. Over the summer, that player worked on their backhand day and night so it would no longer be a weakness. They improved their technique, gained confidence in it and now love their backhand.

Someone that focuses on the process and understands that there are many “options” will be able to adjust to this situation and increase their chances of winning.

Life is the same way, if you “assume” that everything in the past will ALWAYS be the same, you’re in for a rude awakening.

Conditions are constantly changing and as long as you understand that, you will be able to perform better, have more fun and learn in the process. There is no right or wrong, just options.

Let me ask you a question…

When does 1 + 1 NOT equal 2?

When you combine two sandcastles…they become one pile.

Be Mindful of changing conditions and different perspectives.

Message #174 HE SHOOTS…HE SKORS!!!

Joe Clawson is a player on the Skor Mustangs for the Special Olympics. #32 and his team had a game yesterday versus the Jaguars at the Eunice Kennedy Shriver Sports & Training Center in Lawrenceville, NJ.

I went with the great Brad Abouchedid to show Joey our support. I was in for a surprise.

Here are a few things I saw…

Leadership
Communication
Athleticism
Amazing Support from Coaches, Teammates, family and friends
Focus
Inspiration
and Lots of Smiles!!!

Final score…Joey Clawson and his Skor Mustangs: 37, the Jaguars: 22.

Even though the Mustangs scored more points, EVERYBODY WON!!!

When you give it your all, help others, have fun and learn…you WIN!

I interviewed #32, Joey Clawson after the game. I found out that the Mustangs have been undefeated for 5 years. Mr. Clawson, played tennis for Ewing High School and is now attending The College of New Jersey.

Joe has won 3 silver medals and 2 gold medals for the Special Olympics in States and Sectionals. He also was named best Athlete in 2003 by all the coaches.

I asked Joe what skills he needed to be a great basketball player. He said it took Concentration, Fitness and Teamwork.

Joe Clawson also feels that you can use those same principles in school and other areas of life. In the fall, he helps coach a local football team.

I can’t tell you how many times I said the word “Wow” during the game yesterday. I saw a tremendous amount of desire by all the special athletes, which reminds me of a quote from the Special Olympics…

“Programmed into our very human nature is the desire to push limits. Here is the proof.”

Great job, Joe!!!

Message #173 HOW’S YOUR FOCUS?

Are you focused…

At work?

At school?

In practice?

In competition?

In your relationships?

In your finances?

In your health/fitness?

Message #172 Be Humble

A father lived with his son on a farm and it was time to collect some grains. As the boy looked out at the harvest, he said to his dad, “Look at how those wheat heads hold themselves up so proudly. They must be filled with the most grains.” “No my son” the father said, as he crushed those wheat heads that stood proudly, “they only contain a few poor shriveled grains. The ones that bow their heads humbly, are the ones filled with the large golden kernels of wheat.”

Humility and Modesty are two necessary individual strengths in sports and life. If you think about it, no successful person can do it on their own. You need family, friends, coaches, teammates, opponents, classmates, co-workers, bosses, employees, competitors, the list goes on…

You DO need Confidence and Self Efficacy, but you don’t need to act like the best thing since sliced bread.

Thank you Melissa S. for sharing this story.

Message #171 DON’T WAIT…

Today’s message is especially dedicated to my uncle, the late, great David Wei.

Life is a precious thing and something that I feel we all take for granted.

Yesterday, I attended my uncle’s funeral. My cousin, Tony, said that among his father’s last words to him were, “Enjoy life. Travel. DON’T WAIT…”

At the end of the day, do you want to say “I’m glad I did” or “I wish I had”

DON’T WAIT…to pursue your passions

DON’T WAIT…to get on that exercise program

DON’T WAIT…to tell your loved ones how you feel

DON’T WAIT…to try a new sport

DON’T WAIT…to quit smoking

DON’T WAIT…to reconnect with an old friend

Every day is precious…

DON’T WAIT
