Do you want to be better than the competition?

Do you want to get to the next level?

Do you want to be an expert in your field?

Here’s how you do it…

Cross-training. Mental and physical cross-training.

If you are an athlete, do some sport-specific exercises to improve your movement on the court or in the field. The more efficient you move the better you will perform in your specific sport.

You also need to cross-train your mind. So if you get nervous playing a match, give a talk in front of your class or to your co-workers. If you are in business, talk to people in other industries to get fresh ideas and think “outside the box.” The more you can perform under pressure situations and think creatively, the better results you will get.

“If you do what everyone else is doing, you’re going to get the same results as everyone else. If you go above and beyond, your results will be, as well.”

MESSAGE #267 TRAIN LIKE A SUPER BOWL CHAMP

Today’s message is especially dedicated to the great Chris Longo.

After the Colts beat the Bears in the 2007 Super Bowl in the sometimes pouring rain, Bears quarterback, Rex Grossman supposedly asked Peyton Manning how he was able to throw in such terrible conditions. Do you know what Manning’s secret was?

He practiced “wet snaps” the week before. He basically soaked a bunch of footballs in a big bucket of water and had someone snap the ball to him and he practiced receiving and throwing wet footballs. Now that’s preparation.

Most people hate playing in poor conditions like rain, wind, sun, extreme heat or cold, but the great ones actually practice under those conditions and when it actually happens they have a major advantage.

So take it from the Super Bowl champ…practice different scenarios so that you’re prepared for anything.

MESSAGE #266 ONE THING AT A TIME…

Today’s message is especially dedicated to the great Jared Bennett.

Everyone says you should stay in the present, but what does that mean?

It means you shouldn’t focus on the past or future. Someone once said, “Guilt is in the past. Anxiety is in the future. The power is in the present.”

In other words, focus on one thing at a time. Focus on whatever it is you’re doing. Don’t multi-task.

In their book, “100 Ways to Create Wealth,” Steve Chandler and Sam Beckford say that at any given time, we are either owners or victims. The owner is mentally focused on doing one thing and the victim feels overwhelmed and swamped.

The victim tries to do too many things at once and as a result, the quality of their work shows it and they get so overwhelmed that they are drained of their energy.

“People are rewarded for how they do their one thing, not for how many things they worry about.”

So do one thing and ONLY one thing at a time; give it your full-focus and do it well. It will take you less time and will give you the confidence to tackle the next “one thing.”

On the court…focus on one point.
In the classroom…focus on one assignment.
At work…focus on the one project.
In your relationships…focus on one conversation.

The other option is to try to do too many things and end up driving yourself crazy. Which would you choose?

MESSAGE #263 THE VALUE OF SPORTS

A Happy Belated Birthday to Scott Peters in Texas.

Today’s message is especially dedicated to the great Dan Horowitz.

Craig Masback was the 1980 U.S. indoor mile champion and former American record holder at 2,000 meters. His 1979 clocking of a 3:52.02 mile, one of his 30 sub-four-minute miles, put him at history’s sixth fastest miler at the time. Masback’s first sub-four-minute mile was run at the Iffley Road track in Oxford, England, where he was the second man to break the magical barrier. Mr. Masback is the former CEO of USA Track & Field and now Director of Business Affairs-Nike Global Sports Marketing.

I met Craig last night at his talk at Princeton University. The topic was “The Enduring Values of Sports-Facing Up to the Challenges of the 21st Century.”

Masback began by talking about how sports are in crisis, giving several examples of cheating, such as athletes using performance enhancing drugs and Nascar drivers illegally leaving pieces off of their cars so they are lighter. He then went on to say that Values and Community are just as important, if not MORE important than just results.

From Craig Masback’s talk, I could see that he and I are on the same mission…to use sports to help society. When you see all this cheating around you, you are more likely to cheat yourself. Masback gave an example of a restaurant in Florida that claimed they served grouper when upon further investigation, it was not grouper but tilapia or some other sort of similar fish.

I think sports are a microcosm of life. HOW you get there is more important than IF you get there. If you get straight A’s but cheated, it’s tainted. If you make a million dollars, but you only care about yourself, it’s tainted.

Some of the life lessons in sports are: honesty, teamwork, confidence, focus, concentration, goal setting, contribution, dealing with failure, and taking risks.

The skills you acquire, and the challenges you face in sports, are the same skills and challenges you will encounter in life. If you can succeed in sports, you can succeed in life.

MESSAGE #262 MMM MMM GOOD…

How do you feel when I mention the following foods?…

Crisp Broadbean
Fried Spicy Peanuts with Anchovies
Dried Pork Sung
Fish Balls
Chicken Feet
Fish Eyeballs
Intestine

Those of you brought up in an Asian household may be salivating. Those of you who weren’t may be nauseous. But does this mean that those things AREN’T delicious? No, it just means that you’re not used to them. You’ve never had them, so you don’t know what they’re like.

Life is the same way, many of us are so conditioned into a way of thinking and doing that we aren’t open to new things, ideas or people. If you keep doing the same thing, you’ll keep getting the same result. If your life is perfect, stop reading. If you stopped reading, stop lying to yourself.

To continuously improve, you need to be open to more things. Be open to other people’s ideas. Even though I’m a tennis pro, I like reading magazines like Golf, Yoga, Oprah, and others to get new ideas and see how they all relate to one another.

I know a Director of Tennis at a prestigious country club that has taught the same lessons for the past 30 years! Come on! I know that everyone has different teaching styles, but when you do the same thing over and over and over again, you don’t continue to improve and the enjoyment for the teacher AND student diminishes.

Now, I’m not telling you to go out and try chicken feet or intestine, but I AM telling you to try new things, be open to new ideas and look for new ways to do what you’re already doing. You’ll get better, have more fun and start to become an expert at whatever you do.
